About the Author
Barbara Sue Sweetwood was born a Kansas girl. She has done everything from run heavy equipment to being operations manager at a guest ranch in Wyoming. She spent 23 years as an employee at the US headquarters of an international food ingredient company where she was in quality control, an innovations lab technician and finally switchboard operator.
Barbara Sue has enjoyed writing books, short stories and poetry since she was a young girl and has had many of her writings published. She is an avid Elvis Presley fan and has been riding her own Harley Davidson since 1978.
She is an outdoors woman who likes to shoot guns, fish, camp, ride horses and her motorcycle.
"My books have no harsh swearing or sexual content. I want every age group to be able to enjoy my work.
My first book, One Woman's Courage, is based in Teton County, Wyoming circa 1865 and is about a young woman trying to run a horse ranch on her own after the untimely death of her father. She is accused of a crime she did not commit and the story tells of her survival during the long winter months in the mountains after she flees from the authorities.
My second book entitled A Rapid Heartbeat is the story of a middle aged woman trying to find her heart's desires. She has given up on love and has become bored with her life when she has a chance meeting with a Montana cattle rancher. The story has a hint of my life in it so it was fun and enlightening to write.
My third book is entitled Emma Wood's One Woman's Courage Part II. It is a sequel to One Woman's Courage. I had so many reader's wanting to hear more about Emma that I decided to take her story a step further.I enjoyed writing this book and hopefully my readers will be delighted with the ending."
My fourth book entitled Another Mile is about a southern woman who loses her husband during the Civil War and decides to try finding another life in the west. She has no idea what she is getting herself into until she finds herself in a strange and untamed land full of danger and situations she could never have dreamed of. This book is full of adventure and it is easy to get caught up in the escapades of Katie Davis.
My fifth book is entitled Cassie's Gold. It is about the 1849 gold rush and a young married couple from Mississippi in 1850 who have made their way to California in search of gold. With thoughts of striking it rich they find them selves in one situation after another. The struggles they endure and whether their love for each other is able to withstand "Gold Fever". I planned on having this book finished and published by the spring of 2014 and am proud to say that it is out for purchase.
I released my sixth book November 25, 2014. It is called The Snow Tracker. It is a very intense story of a young married woman named Abigail Sterling and her Bernese Mountain Dog named Pete. Abigail's husband, Daniel, is stationed at Fort Keogh right after the Battle of Little Big Horn. It is the worst winter on record for Montana and Abigail is alone in their mountain cabin with only the company of her dog when a giant grizzly bear comes calling. This book is full of intense moments and has a kind of 'edge of your seat' feeling. I hope you enjoy it!
November 2015 I released my seventh book entitled Ace In The Hole. It is the story of a card playing handsome dandy that is quite the con man. He cons the wrong woman in a small town in south Texas and she travels to Mexico to get her revenge. She meets up with quite a character there who becomes her friend and companion. This book has a lot of humor in it and a very good character study. I really enjoyed writing this story.
December 2016 my lastest book is entitled The Long Ride. It is the story of Elijah Rivers and his quest to become a riverboat captain. First he decides to ride for The Pony Express to make the money he needs to learn his trade aboard the steamer. He falls into danger as well as love. The young girl that steals his heart is Tess Clark, the granddaughter of one of the switching station managers, and the two of them find more adventure than they bargined for. As always, this book is rated for all ages. There is never any sexual content or harsh language.
September 2017 my tenth book is The Dusty Trail. It is the story of a young couple, Jeb and Mattie, who fall in love and marry. They decide to give up their pampered lives in search of their dreams. They join up with a wagon train headed down The Santa Fe Trail in Independence, MO. on the adventure of a lifetime. They have many challenges along the way including sickness, Indian attacks and horrific weather. Jeb and Mattie Barton find a young orphaned boy who is also looking to fulfill a dream by finding parents that truly love him. It is a love story but also a story of hardship and struggle that many found on this epic journey. I hope you will find this new book enjoyable but also historically interesting.
May 2018 my eleventh book is called Annie Gavin. The story of a young girl who grew up in an orphanage in Abilene, KS. The old maid that ran the place was cruel, especially to Annie as she was a very pretty girl unlike herself. Miss Hubert was mean to all of the girls until one day Annie was tired of being mistreated and ran away. It was winter and although she was freezing cold she was still happy to be far from the orphanage. She happens to meet up with a young cowhand and he takes her to the ranch where he works. There is a lot of heart and soul in this story. There are bad guys and good guys with several thrilling encounters but it is mostly about Annie Gavin and the life she has led and the realization of what growing up means in the real world. Finding out the truth of her parents and that love comes from the heart and not always from blood. I enjoyed this story, I hope you will also.
September 2019 my twelfth book is titled Riding Spirit. It is the story of a young farm girl from Iowa that decides as a child after her first county rodeo that she wants to become a champion barrel racer when she grows up. The story is circa 1990 and Julie Mason is a bright, high spirited, hard working young woman. She has run the junior rodeo circuit and now is ready for the big show, the professional rodeo circuit. She has the horse, Spirit, and all of the experience she needs to become a winner and fulfill her dreams. She runs into trouble at her first rodeo in Cody, Wyoming where she encounters some mean girls from Texas. They are relentless but Julie befriends a young woman who becomes a special person in her life. There are plenty of cowboys to fall for but Julie has her mind set on one in particular. God has a plan for everyone and Julie is no exception. She must find it in her heart to forgive and become the person that she was meant to be if she ever wants to have the riding spirit. I love this story and it's characters. It took a long time for me to finish this book as I had the death of my mother and then I moved during this past winter. I hope you enjoy my new book, Riding Spirit.
March of 2021 my new book Ruby was finally published. It took me over a year to finish this book as I had lost my mother at Christmas in 2018 and at Christmas in 2019 I lost my sweetheart of almost 12 years. Then I had several bad health issues to tend to but in November of 2020 I was back and feeling so much better. This story is probably the closet I have ever come to writing a love story. There is no sexual or misleading lines in it but experiences of the heart along with a lot of adventure. There are bad guys and good guys like all of my books but this is the first time I have ever tried to climb inside the heart and soul of two of my subjects to express their feelings towards each other. It is not a romance novel but more of a spiritual one between the two main characters in the book, Isaac and Ruby and all of the challenges that they have to conquer to be together. I hope you enjoy this reading and please note that I have dedicated this book to my best friend, companion, soul mate and the love of my life Mr. Jack N. Berry. I miss you everyday. This is my 13th book.
Barbara Sue has an obsession with strong and independent women as she has always been one herself. She is still looking for her own "niche" in life but she says the ride is worth the wait!

Ruby Paperback – March 4, 2021
by Barbara Sue Sweetwood (Author)
Ruby Buxton was a wallflower but she fell in love and married Frank and they married. They had a Kansas Land Grant and Frank was working the property and working nights at the saw mill to keep up with the mortgage payments. It became too much and one evening Frank passed away. Ruby was lost and had no idea how she was going to keep up the land and make the mortgage payments without her husband. One day a fellow happened by and offered to do some work in exchange for a meal and something to drink. Ruby invited him to stay on as a hired hand for food and shelter and the two of them became very close. She also became quite the shot with her husband's rifle and found that using pelts to make vests and mufflers paid better than scrubbing and mending other people's clothes. Life was looking up for Ruby and Isaac until a band of crooks and thieves showed up on their doorstep. There was one thing that Ruby did not know about her beloved Isaac and that was his true identity. Would she be able to save Isaac not knowing the truth about his past and was their love strong enough to overcome the obstacles along the way? One thing Ruby knew for sure was that she was not going to let the man she loved die without a fight. She had lost Frank and she was not going to lose Isaac without a battle.
